How to Plan a Thoughtful Proposal

Thinking about popping the question?

First of all—congrats! Planning a proposal doesn’t have to be a huge production. The most memorable ones are personal, thoughtful, and true to your relationship.

Here are a few proposal tips:

1. Say something. Even if you’re not a words person, this is your moment. It doesn’t have to be a speech, just a few heartfelt sentences go a long way.

2. Play your song. A small but powerful detail that makes the moment feel even more personal.

3. Think about how she’ll feel. Would she want to be in a cute outfit? Does she like having her nails done? Proposing when she already feels confident makes the memory (and photos) even better.

4. Get a photo before and after. Whether it’s a friend with a camera, your own phone, or hiring a photographer to hide in the bushes, try to capture both the moment and the reactions after. You’ll want to remember it all.

5. Pick your location carefully + scout it ahead of time. Choose a spot that feels right for your relationship (private, public, sentimental, spontaneous), and do a quick walkthrough to check for surprises like noise, crowds, or awkward logistics.

6. Make sure you’re upright when you kneel. There are TikToks arguing how important "the kneel" is!

7. Keep it just between you two... at least for a little while. There’s something really special about having a few days where it’s just yours before telling everyone.

8. It doesn’t have to be elaborate, just intentional. The best proposals are simple, sincere, and full of heart. (And if you're still choosing a ring, now's a great time to make sure it feels just as personal as the moment.)

9. Talking to her parents ahead of time. You'll know whether or not this is important in your situation. But if you do, just make sure they know it's supposed to be a surprise!

At the end of the day, a thoughtful proposal is one you’ll both remember and feel proud to tell the story of.
