Here’s what to expect when you go the custom route—and how much it really costs.
So, what is a custom ring?
At Ma Folie, it means you're not picking something out of a case. We start from scratch—around your ideas, your budget, and your partner’s style. That could mean designing something entirely new or working off a few reference photos and shaping it into something more personal.
It’s collaborative, and no, you don’t have to know anything about diamonds, gemstones or rings to start.

How long does it take?
Most rings take around 6–8 weeks from the time we finalize the design. If we’re sourcing a harder-to-find gemstone or making something more complex, it can take longer. We’ll always let you know if timing might be tight for your proposal date.
What’s the process like?

Book a consultation
We’ll chat about what you’re looking for—stone shape, design ideas, budget—and start creating the vision together. -
Choose your stone
We’ll source a few diamonds or gemstones that meet your criteria. Once you’ve chosen your stone, a 50% deposit on the ring secures it and kicks off the production process. -
Your design, your approval
You’ll receive design renders and a 3D wax model of the ring to approve before anything gets made. Our goldsmith will not start making the ring until you’ve signed off on the details. -
Ring reveal
When the ring is ready, we’ll arrange pick-up or ship it to you directly.
What does a custom engagement ring cost in Vancouver?
Most of our clients spend between $5,000 and $10,000 for a natural sapphire ring or a lab diamond ring. Natural diamond rings require a higher budget. We don't use lab sapphires or moissanite stones. We also don't use stones that clients bring in themselves.
Pricing is dependent on the style, as well as the stone’s colour, shape, quality and size. Generally lab diamonds are more affordable than natural sapphires with the exception of lab coloured diamonds.
No matter what, we’ll walk you through all the options so you feel good about what you're getting.
Is it worth it?
We’re biased, but yes. You get a ring that actually feels like you. Not mass-produced. Not marked up with 6 layers of retail. Just thoughtful design, made locally, by someone who cares about the details.
