Taylor Swift’s Engagement Ring: Vintage Meets Modern

Taylor Swift’s Engagement Ring: Vintage Meets Modern

The announcement of Taylor Swift’s engagement has Ma Folie and the jewellery world intrigued, with lots of curiosity about her ring. Its design perfectly balances a vintage yet modern style.

The Ring

The ring features an 8- to 10-carat elongated old-mine cushion cut diamond that offers a vintage feel, but it is also a solitaire (single-stone) bezel setting which makes it modern.

Old mine cushion cuts also have 58 facets. What does 5+8 equal? 13! (Taylor's lucky number!)

While not many people know about old-mine cushion cut diamonds, it is likely they will now grow in popularity. They have soft, rounded corners, and larger facets than the more modern brilliant-cut diamonds, giving it a vintage, romantic vibe.

While the ring is a statement piece, old-mine cushion cut diamonds are understated and subtle compared to other diamond cuts. It is likely Swift’s diamond was custom cut because it is rare to find a diamond in that size and cut. It would not surprise us either if Travis Kelce asked for an 8.13 carat as you can request a special number when you custom cut diamonds. Our clients have asked for their special numbers to be incorporated into their rings.

The ring’s yellow gold band has accent diamonds and we think they might halfmoon diamonds but it's hard to tell from the photos. If they are halfmoon diamonds, they are another a rare choice. The band also features hand engraving that makes the piece truly personal.

Ma Folie estimates that the ring, if it features a natural diamond, would retail between $1 million to $1.5 million (CAD). If the ring features a lab diamond, the ring is likely between $45K to $60K (CAD).

For perspective, a popular choice amongst Ma Folie’s clients is typically a 2-carat diamond ring. A comparable ring to Taylor Swift’s is Ma Folie’s Heirloom piece, featuring a 2-carat elongated old mine cushion cut lab diamond that retails for just over $7K (CAD).

The Independent Advantage

Behind outstanding rings like this often stands a jeweller who values individuality over  uniformity. Props to Travis Kelce for working with an independent jeweller rather than a celebrity jeweller.

Independent designers have the freedom to make unique and intentional pieces, unlike those mass-produced for major retailers. Clients are involved in the creative process, resulting in custom rings that are not only beautiful but deeply personal.

Our Take

Taylor’s ring hits the right balance between vintage and modern. Vintage because of the old-mine cushion cut diamond and modern because of its bezel, solitaire setting. The ring’s unique halfmoon accent diamonds and engraving on the band makes it even more intentional, something only an independent, custom jeweller can offer.

We cannot wait to hear the song that captures this moment in her life. We're certain we'll hear about the details of the proposal in a future next album!
