The shape comes from the 18th and 19th centuries, when cutters shaped diamonds by eye rather than by machine, following the natural form of the rough stone instead of a fixed formula.

That process is what gives the old mine cushion cut its soft silhouette with rounded corners, along with a higher crown, a smaller table, and a more open culet than a modern cut.

Not every cushion cut diamond is an old mine cushion cut, and the difference comes down to the facets. A modern cushion cut is faceted for maximum bling (jewellers refer to this as brilliance).

An old mine cushion cut keeps the antique proportions instead: a smaller table, a higher crown, and a larger, more visible culet. It gives off a more subtle diamond, and less bling.
