Why an East West Diamond Ring Changes How the Stone Reads

  • About the East West Setting

    Most diamonds are set north-south, pointing up the finger toward the knuckle the way engagement rings have looked for generations. An east west diamond ring rotates the stone 90 degrees instead, so it runs horizontally across the finger.

    This style is gaining momentum. For example, Zendaya's engagement ring, a cushion cut diamond set east-west and wrapped in a bezel, is a constant inspiration. Elongated shapes like oval, marquise, and emerald cuts were built for this orientation. Turned sideways, they show off length and line in a way a north-south setting never lets them.
